International Perspective
|
As a member of the Australian Pilot Project, Healthy Cities Noarlunga became a member of a small international network of cities and communities promoting a new approach to ‘public health' based on the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. The first three years, 1987-1990, was a time of new development, with many examples of intersectorial projects working within a supportive environment. |

Regular visits from Dr Ilona Kickbusch from the World Health Organisation European project, and other leaders in Healthy Cities who attended the World Health Organisation Healthy Public Policy Conference in Adelaide in 1988 encouraged and supported Healthy Cities Noarlunga's establishment. The description of these early years is described in 'Healthy Cities' edited by John Ashton from Liverpool which features the Visions of Noarlunga poster as its cover. From 1991-1997 there have been visits from both national and international visitors: |
- Professor Takehito Takano from Healthy Cities Tokyo visited the city in March, 1994. He was particularly impressed with our community involvement and the intersectorial support.
Healthy Cities hosted a visit of Public Health Administrators from the Municipality of Bangkok led by the Deputy Governor, Dr Chaiyan, in July, 1995. The visit was jointly hosted with the Mayor of Onkaparinga and the School of Medical Education at Flinders University.
- In February, 1996, Healthy Cities was proud to be associated with the ceremony to mark the City of Onkaparinga's membership of the World Health Organisation's Safe Communities International Network.
Ainč Kennedy, from Glasgow Healthy Cities, spent three months with Noarlunga Health Services and Healthy Cities Noarlunga to improve processes and roles.
Healthy Cities also hosted visits from the Healthy Cities Intensive run by the Department of Public Health of Flinders University. The visit included a number of overseas participants from the Philippines and Thailand.
