Safe and Healthy Workplaces in the South
| Unsafe working practices, lack of knowledge and inexperience can all result in
injury in the workplace. Safe and Healthy Workplaces in the South brings
together school students, small businesses, health professionals and teachers to
reduce the incidence of workplace injury. School leavers in the Onkaparinga area are set to benefit from this project initiated by Noarlunga Health Services and Southern Futures (the Southern Vales Cluster of Secondary Schools). Staff at Noarlunga Health Services and Southern Futures are working with approximately 200 small businesses and ten high schools in the southern suburbs to provide young school leavers with all the skills necessary to learn safe work practices before leaving school. The project not only aims to reduce the incidence of workplace injury by introducing strategies to develop a link between leaving school and entering the workplace but also to encourage employers to introduce and maintain safe working practices. A spin off from the project has been the opportunity for school leavers who have been involved in the project to gain employment in the area. Employers are keen to secure young workers who have been trained in safe work practices. A Southern Business Directory has been developed to advertise businesses taking part in the project.
