Towards a Safe Community

Agriculture is now recognised to be among the highest risk industry groups for occupational injury and disease. Young people can work in potentially hazardous farm settings at a young age, more so than in any other industry, often with little training or experience.

In Australia, between 1986 and 1992 75% of reported child injuries in workplaces occurred on farms (excluding home premises of farm).

These factors indicate that adolescents and young people aged between 15-24 years of age are especially vulnerable to injury in the process of working or living on rural properties.

The Health Service and Willunga High School have collaborated in the development of a unique Health and Safety Project. The project targets young people working or living on rural properties. The focus is to raise awareness in hazard identification and injury prevention through the development of educational health and safety resources.
