Objective 1

To improve the level of consumer participation in the planning and decision-making of coordinated care delivered by the Lyell McEwin Emergency Department.

Between July and November 1998 a series of Consumer Focus Groups were held in the Northern suburbs. These groups provided the opportunity for the community to put forward their comments and ideas in response to their experiences of the ED. These consultations raised many issues and provided solutions and strategies to address these needs. The following Focus Groups were held within the local community;
Salisbury Police
Aboriginal Women’s Focus Group Meeting
Women’s Focus Group Meeting
Mental Health Support Group
Spanish Speaking Group
Young People’s Group Meeting
Post-Natal Depression Support Group
Elderly Persons Support Group
Vietnamese Women’s Friendship Group
Visually Impaired Support Group
Northern Disability Forum
Northern Carers Network

The Munno Para Health Promotion Bus also gathered information from people as it travelled extensively in the surrounding area.

The consultations provided the opportunity for a wide cross-section of the community to have their say and provide feedback in response to their experiences of the ED.

The Focus Groups were held in an open and frank manner. There was an informality and ease about the meetings, and community members felt comfortable in expressing their views and telling their stories in their own way.
