During Consumer’s Perspective Focus groups the
opportunity was provided for the community to put forward their comments and
ideas in response to their experiences of the ED. These consultations raised
many issues and provided solutions and strategies to address these needs. (See
Appendix 1)
The following initiatives are currently being developed and implemented
within the Emergency Department.
Waiting
Room Play Area
Feedback from a number of community focus groups identified the need
for improved facilities for young children within the ED waiting room.
|
Comments included:
 | The waiting room is really a boring place where time passes very
slowly, especially for children who are not ill but accompanying
parents. |
 | The ED should look at getting sponsorship to create a play area to help
amuse/distract young children in the waiting area. |
|

New Play Area – Emergency Department
|
 | Children need a small area (similar to that at the Europa Clinic) where
they can sit/play; perhaps even have a chalkboard mounted on the wall? |
Funding obtained from the Elizabeth Police Blue Light Disco, has facilitated
the development of a suitable play area for small children.
Primary School Children’s Educational Video
|
A number of focus group participants
identified the provision of information and education on the role of the
ED as a priority need, particularly in relation to children.
The Young People’s Focus Group at Shopfront, Salisbury,
specifically asked if it would be possible to make a video for students
about the work of the ED?
|
|
A sponsorship proposal has been developed by the ED to develop an educational
video resource/teaching package for primary school students. It aims to improve
awareness and understanding of the ED. The video will allow staff to be
introduced and discuss the role they play in the department, illustrate what a
child may expect when attending the ED, and to raise issues of accident
prevention.
It is intended that a teacher’s guide and student activities folder will be
included in the package to assist teachers in developing themes and encouraging
student participation and discussion. Funding is currently being sought for the
development of the video and teaching package.
